Retailers close on Sunday as a mark of respect

Dec 12, 2013 | 8:25 AM |by Staff Writer

As a symbol of respect, several major South African retailers will be closed on Sunday, the day of Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

All retailers falling under the Clicks Group of shops will be closed, and yesterday Woolworths,Shoprite and Italtile announced that all their stores would be closed too.

Virgin Active gym's have also announced that they will be closed on Sunday.

"Obviously, it's a very important time of the year in terms of trading, but we were guided by what our staff and customers would want. We feel it is an appropriate symbol of respect," group CEO David Kneale said in a statement on Wednesday. They would open the next day, December 16, even though it was a public holiday.

"As a mark of respect, and in honour of the legacy that Mandela left for the nation, all Woolworths stores in South Africa will be closed on Sunday," said CEO Ian Moir.

"This decision, which we have taken in consultation with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, will enable our staff to spend time with their families on the day of Madiba's funeral and honour a great statesman in ensuring that his legacy continues," said Massmart spokeswoman Annaleigh Vallie.

The affected shops are: Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Builders Trade Depot, Builders Superstore, CBW, Cambridge Food, DionWired, Game Stores, Jumbo Cash and Carry, Makro, and Rhino Cash and Carry.

...but they WILL be open for trade on Christmas day! Anybody else spot the irony?

Hello Tracey. How is JBay? Read my blog: http://sasodomgomorrah.blogspo...

I don't want to show you the others as they will turn your stomach.

With all respect and honour due to MR.Mandela, why is most retailers open on Christmas, as they state " an appropriate symbol of respect", to our Lord Jesus Christ who was born for us

And died for us. He was crucified by His own people. He still sacrificed Himself for the very people who sent Him to his death. What is happening Sunday is sacrilege. Please note of the owners of the said businesses. Are they Christian? NO!! But come Christmas they will be celebrating with us Christians. What hypocrites.

Christmas day is a Christian religious day. Not everybody is Christian and not everybody celebrates Christmas. Hence some shops open - rightfully so.

Then you don't mind not taking our Christian holidays in future? This is not a Christian country. It is a communist country. How come you all celebrate our holidays. We don't celebrate yours.

Not everyone celebrates mandela either. There are a lot of people that don't agree with the things he did.Christianity is more followed than Nelson Mandela.Hence Nadia's comment -rightfully so

I'm sure Spar will be open.

Somebody will always find something to complain or whinge about. They are damned either way.

It is most probably only for this year... just relax Mandela is not taking preferance over Jesus.

The irony is that Jesus wat not even born on 25th Dec. That is such a fake, money making holiday which only came into existence in about the 4th century by catholics and, as somebody pointed below, some people have the good presence of mind not to celebrate pagan holidays so why should stores close on that day?

It is only money-making by the very people who will be closing on Sunday. Do your homework before you open your fat trap.

Oh! By the way, KwirkyC, are you celebrating Christmas with all the people or are you going to work on that day?

wow, and this cant even be done for God.... Since when has Mandela become a God to the people of this world? I find it hard to believe that he will be saving your souls...

Mandela has done more than god ever did, with proof, witnesses and evidence to back it up.

I hope you rot in hell. I want you to study these photos of what Nelson Mandela did from jail. Then I want you to phone the parents and families of the people brutally murdered by Nelson Mandela and tell them that Nelson Mandela has taken over the world as "God". As far as I am concerned, he will never be welcomed into heaven. I know my God and I know what he has done for me and everyone on this earth. Don't tell me Nelson Mandela has done more than my God has. I have proof he was an assassin, murderer, communist, and terrorist. How do I know? I WAS THERE PICKING UP THE PIECES YOU MORON> http://sasodomgomorrah.blogspo...

ok if you say so... I suppose me believing in God will see it differently. But however, if i may comment... The only freedom Mandela fought for was for the freedom from his jail cell, since then everyone lives in fear daily... But i suppose you wont see it that way if you have not been directly affected by poverty, theft, house break, rape, murder, hi-jacking. But yes you are free to speak for those who were wittnessed to YOUR GOD MANDELA's wonders.... May YOUR GOD bless you...

Chantell it doesn't help getting upset with someone who has just committed the sin of never being forgiven by God. This man is doomed to meet his god the devil.

The sad part of this moron is he is even ashamed of the name his parents gave him. He hides behind another name as he is petrified of being found out.
