Desmond Tutu will not attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral

Dec 14, 2013 Editor Africa,

Archbishop Desmond Tutu will not attend former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral in Qunu.

Tutu’s daughter and foundation CEO Mpho Tutu, confirmed to the Saturday Star that her father would not be going to Qunu for Sunday’s state funeral.

“The archbishop is not an accredited clergy person and will thus not be going to Qunu,” she was quoted as saying.

The newspaper reported there was speculation that Tutu had been snubbed because of his outspoken criticism of the current government.

Tutu was also left off the official programme for the Mandela memorial held at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday.

However, at the last minute he was asked to give a blessing at the end of the memorial after the crowd had become disruptive and booed President Jacob Zuma.

A note from the Founder of this Blog (Shaun Higley): As to Tutu not attending the funeral in Qunu: Don’t hassle Mr Tutu. You were a better spokes person than Mr Mandela could ever have been. You have done more for the people of this country than the whole government (all opposition parties included). You and I have met before but under rather different circumstances. Look at it this way, you don’t have to feel bad about not going, I am not going as well. I think for the same reasons as you – I was also left out of the invites.
